Under 16 Phoenix Girls Overcome Cheltenham

Another tight victory (3-2) in another positive season this time over local rivals Cheltenham in the England Hockey League, which is always extra special! Cheltenham had come to play but we started brightly and a perfect through pass to a well positioned Lizzie at the far post gave Ciren an early lead. Chances aplenty at both ends but Isolda was once again unflappable between the posts. Team has made passing 'round the back' a key part of the method and improvement has been rapid here with Molly and Amelia outstanding today, although one small mistake gave a soft equaliser midway through the first half. Undeterred as always Ciren took the direct approach and a fierce strike in to the D by Olivia found its way to Alice who made no mistake for a 2-1 half time lead.

Unfortunately we conceded another soft goal early in the second half which kept parent nerves jangling throughout. Ciren were always dangerous though especially down the right and may have regained the lead a little earlier with a bit more composure or different decision making. However ten minutes to go and more concerted pressure saw a cross shot wriggle free again to Lizzie taking up position A to slot home. There were a few minor scares as the minutes ticked away with Isolda called in to action a few more times. Plenty of great performances by the team today, the group has been together many years and has made a habit of winning close games - it's not a coincidence. It was also nice to see some interest shown by Ciren ladies first team squad members. Victory in the last EH league game against Wotton next month will see us qualify for the West final at the end of the season, which took place last year at Millfield School which is a fabulous place to play sport.

Well done to the whole Under 16 squad for two close victories resulting from good performances - a perfect day hopefully enjoyed by all in green and their associates!
